How to use Mercado Pago in Brazil as a foreigner

Set up Mercado Pago for Pix, payments, and online shopping in Brazil. Works with your CPF even before you have a bank account.

A bank account before you have a bank account

Mercado Pago is the fintech arm of Mercado Livre (Latin America's Amazon). It functions as a digital wallet that gives you Pix access, a virtual debit card, and the ability to pay at stores using QR codes.

The reason this matters for foreigners: Mercado Pago often approves you faster than traditional digital banks. If Nubank or Inter are taking time to verify your account, Mercado Pago can bridge the gap. Many expats use it as their first financial tool in Brazil.

Setup process

Download the Mercado Pago app. Sign up with your CPF and Brazilian phone number. Verify your identity with a selfie and passport photo.

Once approved, you can receive Pix transfers immediately. Add money to your balance and you can pay at any store that accepts QR code payments, which is almost everywhere in Brazil.

The virtual debit card works for online purchases on any site that accepts Mastercard.

When to use Mercado Pago vs a bank

Mercado Pago is great for daily spending: groceries, restaurants, online shopping. But it is not a replacement for a full bank account. You cannot receive salary payments to Mercado Pago, the credit options are limited, and international transfers are not supported.

The smart move: use Mercado Pago from day one, then open Nubank or Inter for your main banking. Keep Mercado Pago for the cashback offers on Mercado Livre purchases.
