How to set up home internet in Brazil as a foreigner

Get fiber internet installed in your Brazilian apartment. Compare Vivo, Claro, TIM, and local providers.

Brazilian internet is better than you think

Brazil has surprisingly good internet infrastructure, especially in major cities. Fiber connections of 300-600 Mbps are common and affordable, often R$100-150/month. Some areas have gigabit available for under R$200/month.

You need a CPF to sign up for any home internet plan. No CPF means no contract, no installation, no service.

The major providers

Vivo Fibra, Largest national provider. Most reliable, widest coverage. Plans from R$90/month for 300 Mbps. Best choice if available in your area.

Claro, Second largest. Competitive pricing. Sometimes offers better deals than Vivo in certain areas. Plans from R$80/month.

TIM Live, Good fiber coverage in major cities. Often the cheapest option. Plans from R$75/month.

Local providers: In many cities, local fiber companies offer the best value. Ask your neighbours or building manager who they use. Companies like Brisanet (Northeast), Desktop (SP interior), and Algar (Minas Gerais) often outperform national providers in their regions.

How to sign up and get installed

Check coverage at each provider's website by entering your address. Not all providers cover all areas, even within the same city.

Sign up online or by calling. You will need your CPF and proof of address. Installation is usually scheduled within 3-7 days.

The technician will install a fiber modem (ONT) and a Wi-Fi router. Most providers include the router in the plan. Installation is usually free with a 12-month contract.

Pro tip: Negotiate. Brazilian telecom companies expect you to negotiate. Call and say you are comparing with a competitor. They will often offer a better price or more speed for the same price.

If you need internet immediately

While waiting for fiber installation, you have options:

Mobile hotspot: Your phone's 4G/5G can handle basic needs. TIM and Vivo have prepaid data plans with 20-50 GB for R$30-50/month.

Portable Wi-Fi: Rent a portable router from mywebspot.com.br or similar services.
