Best places to get a CPF in Sao Luis

Sao Luis has Correios branches that process CPF applications:

Correios Renascenca (near the Renascenca commercial area), the most convenient for foreigners. The neighbourhood is modern and well-serviced. Short waits.

Correios Centro (Rua do Sol, near the historic district), close to the UNESCO World Heritage colonial centre. Busier but atmospheric.

Sao Luis is the only Brazilian state capital founded by the French (1612). The colonial architecture in the Centro Historico features Portuguese azulejo tiles covering entire building facades. It is genuinely beautiful.

The city sees fewer foreign CPF applicants than most capitals. Bring all documents prepared. Portuguese language skills or a cheat sheet are more important here than in cosmopolitan cities.

Where foreigners live in Sao Luis

Renascenca and Calhau are the modern neighbourhoods where most foreigners stay. Beachfront apartments in Calhau run R$1,000-1,800/month. Good infrastructure, restaurants, and supermarkets.

The Centro Historico is fascinating to visit but living there can be challenging. Many buildings are under restoration and amenities are limited.

Sao Luis is the gateway to the Lencois Maranhenses, one of Brazil's most spectacular landscapes (white sand dunes with freshwater lagoons). Most visitors base themselves in Sao Luis for a few days before heading to Barreirinhas or Santo Amaro.

Sao Luis-specific tips

The local cuisine blends African, indigenous, and Portuguese influences. Arroz de cuxo (rice with a local herb), peixada maranhense (fish stew), and juçara (similar to acai but richer) are specialties. With a CPF and iFood, you can try them all without leaving your apartment.

Bumba-meu-boi is the main cultural festival (June). If you are here during the festas juninas season, a CPF lets you buy tickets and participate fully.

Trips to Lencois Maranhenses are best booked through local agencies. Most accept Pix with a 5-10% discount. The 4x4 truck tours from Barreirinhas and the boat trips down the Rio Preguicas run cash or Pix only.
