Getting your CPF in Salvador: what foreigners need to know

Getting a CPF in Salvador, Bahia? Best Correios in Barra, Pituba, and Campo Grande. Tips for Pelourinho, Carnival, and beach life.

Best places to get a CPF in Salvador

Salvador has multiple Correios branches. The best options for foreigners:

Correios Barra (near the Farol da Barra lighthouse), the most foreigner-friendly location. Barra is where many tourists and expats stay. The branch is small but staff are used to international passports.

Correios Pituba (Avenida Manoel Dias da Silva), in a residential neighbourhood popular with longer-term residents. Quieter than Barra, shorter waits.

Correios Campo Grande (Avenida Sete de Setembro), the main downtown branch near the historic centre. Busier but always operational.

Salvador operates on Bahian time. Arrive before 9am for the shortest waits. Things move calmly here. Do not expect Sao Paulo speed and you will be fine.

Where foreigners live in Salvador

Barra is the classic tourist and expat base. Walking distance to the beach, restaurants, and the Correios. Furnished apartments from R$1,200-2,200/month.

Rio Vermelho is where the artists, musicians, and longer-term foreigners settle. Incredible nightlife, cheaper than Barra, famous acaraje at the waterfront.

Pelourinho (the historic centre) is stunning but better for visiting than living. Most foreigners who try living there move after a few weeks because of noise and limited infrastructure.

For proof of address, Salvador has a huge Airbnb market. If you are in a short-term rental, you need a host declaration letter. If you have a longer-term contract in Barra or Rio Vermelho, that works directly.

Salvador-specific tips

Salvador's food is unlike anywhere else in Brazil. Acaraje, moqueca baiana, vatapa, and caruru are Afro-Brazilian specialties you will not find done properly anywhere else. With a CPF and iFood, you can order from the best local restaurants.

If you are here during Carnival (February/March), getting your CPF before the festivities is critical. Carnival blocos require electronic abadas (tickets) that need a CPF to purchase. Without one, you are watching from the sideline.

The ferry to Itaparica island and trips to Morro de Sao Paulo are easier with Pix. Beach vendors, small boats, and local guides all prefer Pix over cash or card.
