CPF for investor visa holders in Brazil

Coming to Brazil on an investor visa? Here is what you need to know about getting a CPF as a foreign investor.

Investors need a CPF first

If you are entering Brazil on an investor visa (VIPER, Visto Permanente para Investidor Estrangeiro), a CPF is one of the first things you need. Opening a Brazilian bank account for your investment, registering with the Central Bank, and purchasing property all require a CPF.

The investor visa itself requires a minimum investment (currently R$500,000 for the standard track, lower for some sectors). Your CPF is the key that connects your identity to all financial and legal transactions in Brazil.

Investor-specific considerations

Having an investor visa can actually smooth the CPF process because you have substantial documentation proving your intent and ability to be in Brazil. Your visa, proof of investment, and bank correspondence all serve as supporting documents.

Proof of address may be easier if you have already purchased or rented property as part of your investment. If not, the same temporary accommodation approaches apply.

Many investors work with a Brazilian lawyer (advogado) or accountant (contador) who can guide you to the right Receita Federal office and ensure your documents are in order.

After your CPF as an investor

With your CPF, you can open business bank accounts, register with the Central Bank (BACEN) for foreign investment tracking, purchase real estate, and set up the financial infrastructure for your investment. If you are starting a business, your CPF is required before you can apply for a CNPJ.

Consult a Brazilian tax advisor early. Foreign investors have specific reporting obligations, and getting this right from the start is much easier than fixing it later.
