Best places to get a CPF in Fortaleza

Fortaleza has several Correios branches that handle CPF applications:

Correios Meireles (Avenida Beira Mar area), the most convenient for foreigners staying in the main tourist and expat neighbourhood. Staff see European and North American passports regularly.

Correios Aldeota (Rua Torres Camara), in the upscale commercial district. Well-organised, air-conditioned, moderate wait times.

Correios Centro (Rua Senador Alencar), the large downtown branch. Busiest of the three but always processes foreigner applications.

Fortaleza is hot year-round, averaging 30-32 degrees. Bring water. The office in Meireles is closest to the beach neighbourhoods where most foreigners stay.

Where foreigners live in Fortaleza

Meireles is the main foreigner neighbourhood, running along the Praia de Meireles beachfront. Most hostels, co-living spaces, and furnished apartments for foreigners are here. Rent runs R$1,200-2,000/month for a one-bedroom.

Iracema (Praia de Iracema) is adjacent to Meireles, slightly more nightlife-oriented. Popular with younger nomads.

Cumbuco is a beach town 30km from Fortaleza, famous for kitesurfing. Many foreigners split time between Cumbuco and the city. If your address is in Cumbuco, you can still apply for a CPF at a Fortaleza Correios.

If you are in a pousada or kite camp in Cumbuco, getting a host declaration letter is essential since you will not have a utility bill or rental contract.

Fortaleza-specific tips

Fortaleza is the gateway to some of Brazil's best coastline. Jericoacoara (Jeri), Cumbuco, Canoa Quebrada, and the Rota das Emocoes are all accessed from here. With a CPF you can book flights on Azul at local prices, rent cars from Localiza or Movida, and pay for pousadas via Pix.

Kitesurfing is a major draw. Local kite schools and equipment rental shops offer monthly plans that require a CPF. Without one you pay daily tourist rates which add up fast.

The seafood here is extraordinary and cheap. With iFood and a CPF, you can order grilled lobster delivered to your apartment for under R$60. Pix works at every barraca (beach hut) along Praia do Futuro.
