Do you need a CPF to join a gym in Brazil?
Most gyms in Brazil require a CPF to register. Here is how to get one and start training.
Most gyms require a CPF
If you want to join a gym in Brazil, almost every chain and independent gym requires a CPF to register. Smart Fit, Bodytech, BlueFit, and local gyms all ask for it. The registration system simply does not proceed without one.
This also applies to Wellhub (formerly Gympass), the popular multi-gym membership platform. A CPF is required to create an account and access the network of thousands of gyms and studios.
Why gyms need your CPF
Brazilian businesses use the CPF for contract registration, billing, and invoice generation. When you join a gym, they create a contract linked to your CPF. Your monthly payments, entry logs, and membership details are all tied to this number.
Some smaller, neighbourhood gyms may let you train without a CPF by paying cash upfront, but this is informal and increasingly rare as payment systems digitise.
How to get your CPF and start training
Get your CPF at a Receita Federal office, which takes about an hour with the right documents. Then walk into any gym with your CPF and passport. Most plans are month-to-month with no long-term commitment.
Smart Fit is the most foreigner-friendly chain, with English on their app and locations everywhere. Plans start around R$100/month. Or join Wellhub for R$30-250/month and access hundreds of different facilities.
Skip the guesswork
We built GET CPF because we went through this process ourselves and wasted more time than we should have. We prepare everything for your specific situation so that you walk into Receita Federal prepared, and your CPF arrives by email three to four days later.
