Do I Need a CPF as a Tourist in Brazil?
The short answer: it depends on what you want to do. A CPF is not legally required for tourists, but without one you are locked out of most of the things that make daily life in Brazil convenient and affordable. Here is a decision guide to help you figure out if it is worth getting one for your trip.
The decision tree
Get a CPF if any of these apply:
- ✓ You want a local SIM card (even prepaid requires CPF)
- ✓ You want to use iFood, Rappi, or other delivery apps
- ✓ You want to shop on Amazon Brazil or Mercado Livre
- ✓ You want to open a Brazilian bank account or use Pix
- ✓ You are renting an apartment (even short-term via real estate)
- ✓ You want to join a gym
- ✓ You are buying long-distance bus tickets online
- ✓ You want Brazilian Netflix, Spotify, or other subscriptions
- ✓ You are staying longer than a few weeks
- ✓ You plan to come back to Brazil in the future
You can probably skip it if all of these are true:
- — Short stay (under two weeks)
- — Staying in hotels with meals included
- — Using international credit cards for everything
- — Using international roaming or eSIM for connectivity
- — Not planning to return to Brazil

Under 2 weeks
You can get by without a CPF. Use international credit cards, hotel Wi-Fi, and cash. You will pay more for some things (foreign transaction fees, tourist SIM rates), but the convenience trade-off may not be worth the time spent getting a CPF for a short visit.
2 weeks to 3 months
A CPF starts paying for itself. A local SIM card alone saves R$200+ compared to international roaming over a month. Add Pix payments (no foreign transaction fees), food delivery, and online shopping, and the savings add up quickly.
3 months or longer
You need a CPF. Period. Without one you cannot rent an apartment, get a proper phone plan, open a bank account, or function as anything other than a short-term visitor. Get it in your first week.
The WanderWallet alternative
WanderWallet is an app that lets tourists make Pix payments via QR code without a CPF. You verify your identity with your passport instead. This is useful if your main concern is paying at restaurants and shops that prefer Pix.
The limitations: you can only send payments, not receive them. You cannot use it for recurring payments, online purchases, or anything that requires a CPF-linked account. It solves the payment problem but not the SIM card, apartment, or bank account problem.
For a short trip where Pix payments are your only need, WanderWallet works. For anything beyond that, you need the CPF itself.
Your CPF never expires
One important detail: once you get a CPF, it is yours for life. It works every time you return to Brazil, whether that is next month or ten years from now. Even if you are only in Brazil for two weeks, getting a CPF is an investment in every future trip.
The only maintenance: if you live outside Brazil, you must complete an annual re-registration via the Receita Federal app to keep it active. This takes five minutes.
The propagation delay
After getting your CPF, it takes 1 to 2 business days before the number works across all systems. Do not go straight from the post office to the phone store. Get your CPF early in your trip so it has time to propagate before you need it.
Frequently asked questions
Can tourists get a CPF?
Yes. You do not need a permanent visa or residency. Tourists on any visa can apply at a Correios post office or Receita Federal office. It never expires.
Can I use Pix without a CPF?
Normally no. Apps like WanderWallet offer limited Pix access via passport verification, but you cannot receive payments or use it for everything Pix normally does.
How long does it take to get a CPF?
About 15 minutes at a Correios (R$7) or Receita Federal office (free). The number itself takes 1 to 2 days to propagate across all systems.
Is it worth it for a two-week trip?
If you want a local SIM, food delivery, or online shopping, yes. If you are in hotels with meals and using credit cards, you can skip it. Either way, the CPF never expires, so it is an investment in future trips.
Does a CPF expire?
No. Once issued, it is yours for life. It works every time you return to Brazil.
