CPF Regularization and Annual Update for Foreigners
Your CPF does not expire, but it can become irregular, suspended, or cancelled. If that happens, your bank accounts freeze, you cannot sign contracts, and you are locked out of most services in Brazil. Here is how to check your status, fix problems, and stay compliant with the new annual update requirement for foreigners living abroad.
How to check your CPF status right now
Go to the Receita Federal status checker at servicos.receita.fazenda.gov.br/servicos/cpf/consultasituacao. Enter your CPF number and date of birth. The system shows your status immediately. No login required.
The six CPF statuses explained
| Status | What it means | Can you fix it? |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | Everything is fine. Your CPF works normally. | No action needed |
| Pendente de Regularizacao | You failed to file required tax returns in the past 5 years, or other compliance issue. | Yes, online or in person |
| Suspenso | Incomplete or incorrect registration data. Also triggered by missing annual recadastramento. | Yes, update your data |
| Cancelado | Duplicate CPF detected, or cancelled by court order. | Sometimes, visit Receita Federal |
| Nula | Fraud detected. The CPF was issued based on false information. | No, need new CPF |
| Titular Falecido | The holder has been registered as deceased. | Visit Receita Federal with proof |
What happens when your CPF is not regular
An irregular CPF triggers a cascade of problems:
- × Banks freeze accounts linked to the suspended CPF
- × You cannot open new bank accounts
- × You cannot sign rental contracts or other legal agreements
- × Government services are blocked
- × Online purchases requiring CPF validation will fail
- × Pix transfers may be restricted
How to regularize your CPF
Online (fastest for most issues)
Visit servicos.receita.fazenda.gov.br/Servicos/CPF/regularizar and follow the steps. You will need to update your registration data (name, address, mother's name). For "Pendente de Regularizacao" status, you may need to file missing tax returns through the Receita Federal's IRPF system first.
Online regularization typically updates within 24 to 72 hours.
In person at a Receita Federal office
Bring your passport and any supporting documents. The staff can update your registration on the spot. This is the best option for "Cancelado" status or complex issues that the online system cannot resolve. Updates can be same-day.

Get started for $29The annual recadastramento (new for 2025)
This is the requirement that most foreigners do not know about yet. Starting January 2025, Instrucao Normativa 2236/2024 mandates that all foreigners aged 16 and older who hold a CPF and live outside Brazil must complete an annual re-registration.
How to complete it
- Download the Receita Federal mobile app (available on iOS and Android)
- Log in with your CPF number
- Navigate to the recadastramento section
- Take a selfie while holding your passport open to the identification page
- Submit and wait for confirmation
Key details
- ✓ Deadline: January 1 to December 31 each year
- ✓ Who: All foreigners 16+ living outside Brazil with a CPF
- ✓ What you need: Smartphone, passport, the Receita Federal app
- ✓ If you miss it: Your CPF status changes to "Suspenso"
If you are a foreigner living inside Brazil, this requirement does not apply to you. It only affects CPF holders who reside outside the country.
Set a reminder. If you got a CPF during a trip to Brazil and then left the country, you need to complete the annual recadastramento to keep your CPF active. Mark your calendar for sometime before December each year.
Common scenarios for foreigners
You got a CPF years ago and never used it
Check your status. If it shows "Regular," you are fine. If it is "Suspenso" due to the new recadastramento requirement, complete the annual check-in via the app. If the data is outdated, update it online or at a Receita Federal office.
You live in Brazil and your CPF became irregular
Most likely cause: missing tax returns. If you earned income in Brazil, the Receita Federal expects annual tax filings (DIRPF). Regularize by filing the missing returns, then update your CPF status.
Your bank account was frozen because of your CPF status
Regularize your CPF first using the online tool or in person. Once your status returns to "Regular" (24-72 hours online, same-day in person), contact your bank. They will unfreeze the account once they verify the updated status.
