CPF for Expats Moving to Brazil
You are not visiting. You are moving. That means you need everything: a bank account, an apartment, utilities in your name, health insurance, a phone plan, maybe a car. Every single one of those requires a CPF. It is the first domino. Get it wrong and everything else stalls.
The expat CPF priority list
Here is the order most expats need things, and why CPF blocks all of it:
- Bank account (need CPF) to stop paying foreign card fees
- Phone plan (need CPF) for local calls and reliable data
- Apartment rental (need CPF) to get out of temporary housing
- Utilities (need CPF) to put electricity, water, internet in your name
- Health insurance (need CPF) for private healthcare
- Car purchase or rental (need CPF) if you plan to drive
Without a CPF, you are stuck in temporary mode. With one, you can start building your life here.
CPF vs CRNM: what is the difference?
CPF is your tax identification number. Any foreigner can get one, on any visa. It takes 15 minutes at a Correios.
CRNM (Carteira de Registro Nacional Migratorio) is your foreign resident ID card. You only get this if you apply for a residency visa through the Federal Police. It takes weeks to months.
Get your CPF immediately. The CRNM can come later if you pursue residency.
Get settled faster
GET CPF handles all the preparation. Right office, pre-filled forms, document checker, host declaration letter. Do it before you even land.
Get started for $29Moving for work vs moving independently
If your company is relocating you: Ask HR if they handle CPF as part of the relocation package. Some do, many do not. Either way, you can do it yourself faster at a Correios than waiting for corporate bureaucracy.
If you are moving independently: CPF is entirely on you. No employer, no university, no relocation agency. GET CPF exists specifically for this. Five minutes of preparation, one visit, done.
2026 rule changes for expats
Important updates
- Only passports accepted since January 2026. National ID cards from your home country no longer work for CPF applications.
- Annual re-registration required if you leave Brazil. Non-residents must update their CPF annually via the Receita Federal app or it gets suspended.
- Name formatting stricter. Foreign names with special characters, hyphens, or suffixes (Jr., III) may cause system errors. GET CPF formats your name correctly for the Brazilian system.
Frequently asked questions
When should I get my CPF?
Day one or two. Every day without it delays banking, phone, housing, and everything else.
Do I need residency?
No. Any visa type works, including tourist visa.
What is the difference between CPF and CRNM?
CPF is your tax ID (quick, any visa). CRNM is your resident card (weeks/months, residency visa only).
Can my employer help?
Some do. But it is faster to do it yourself at Correios with GET CPF's preparation.
What if I leave Brazil later?
CPF never expires but needs annual re-registration via the Receita Federal app if you live abroad.
