Documents Needed for CPF Registration as a Foreigner in Brazil
Getting rejected at the Correios because you brought the wrong documents is frustrating and avoidable. Here is the complete checklist of what you need, what you do not need, and the address proof workarounds most guides do not mention.
Required documents (everyone)
- 1 Valid passport - original document, not a copy. Must not be expired. Bring the physical passport, not a photo on your phone.
- 2 Proof of Brazilian address - a utility bill (water, electricity, gas, internet), rental contract, or bank statement showing a Brazilian address. The document should be recent (within the last 3 months).
- 3 R$7 processing fee (if applying at Correios). Bring cash. Some branches accept card but not all. Receita Federal is free.
If you do not have a Brazilian address
This is the most common obstacle. If you are in an Airbnb, hotel, hostel, or staying with a friend, you probably do not have a utility bill or rental contract in your name. The solution is a host declaration letter (carta de declaracao).
A host declaration letter is a signed document from the person you are staying with. It states that you reside at their address. It needs to include:
- ✓ The host's full name and CPF number
- ✓ Their full address
- ✓ Your full name and passport number
- ✓ A statement that you reside at their address
- ✓ Date and signature
- ✓ Some offices also ask for a copy of the host's ID or a recent utility bill in their name

Tourist visa
Passport + address proof (or host declaration letter). That is it. No additional documents required.
Work visa / CTPS holder
Passport + address proof + CTPS (work permit card) if you have one. The CTPS is not strictly required for CPF, but some offices ask to see it.
Student visa
Passport + address proof + enrollment letter from your university (helpful but not always required).
Digital nomad visa (VITEM XIV)
Same as tourist visa: passport + address proof. The digital nomad visa does not change the CPF requirements.
What you do NOT need
- × Certified translations of your passport. Not required.
- × Notarized copies. Bring originals, not notarized copies.
- × Passport photos. CPF registration does not require photos.
- × An appointment. Correios is walk-in. No booking needed.
- × A Brazilian bank account. You get the CPF first, then open the bank account.
Common rejection reasons
- × Expired passport. Your passport must be valid at the time of application.
- × No address proof. This is the number one reason foreigners get turned away. Bring a utility bill or host declaration letter.
- × Wrong office. Not every Correios branch processes CPF applications.
- × Incomplete form. The application is in Portuguese. Filling it out incorrectly can cause delays.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need certified translations?
No. Your original passport is sufficient. Brazilian offices do not require translations for CPF applications.
Can I use a hotel address?
It depends on the office. Some accept hotel booking confirmations, but many do not. A host declaration letter is more reliable.
Do I need passport photos?
No. CPF registration does not require photos. Just your passport and address proof.
What if my passport is about to expire?
Your passport must be valid. If it expires within a few weeks, renew it first. Some offices may refuse a nearly-expired passport.
Can someone else apply for me?
No. CPF applications for foreigners must be done in person with your original passport.
