Pix for Foreigners: The Complete Guide to Brazil's Payment System
Pix is how Brazil moves money. Over 150 million people use it. Restaurants, street vendors, landlords, friends splitting a bill, government services, online shopping. If you are living in or visiting Brazil, understanding Pix is not optional. This is the complete guide for foreigners: what it is, how it works, how to set it up, and every edge case you might run into.
What is Pix and why does it matter?
Pix is Brazil's instant payment system, launched by the Central Bank (Banco Central do Brasil) in November 2020. It lets anyone with a Brazilian bank account send and receive money instantly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. No fees for individuals. Transactions settle in seconds.
To put the scale in perspective: Pix processed over 40 billion transactions in 2025. It has surpassed credit cards, debit cards, and cash as the most common payment method in Brazil. When you walk into a bakery and see a printed QR code taped to the counter, that is Pix. When your landlord asks for rent, they give you a Pix key. When you split a dinner bill, everyone Pixes their share in 10 seconds.
For foreigners, Pix is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade you can get in Brazil. Without it, you are the person at the checkout asking "do you take Visa?" while everyone behind you pays instantly with their phone. With Pix, you pay the same way Brazilians do, at the same speed, with zero fees.
The catch: you need two things to use Pix. A CPF (Brazil's taxpayer ID) and a Brazilian bank account. Both are straightforward to get, and this guide walks you through the complete process.
How Pix works: the basics
Pix replaces the old way of transferring money in Brazil, which required the recipient's bank name, branch number (agencia), account number, and CPF. Now you just need one thing: a Pix key.
There are four types of Pix keys you can register:
- ✓ CPF number -- the most common key. When someone asks "what is your Pix?", most Brazilians just give their CPF.
- ✓ Email address -- useful if you prefer not to share your CPF with strangers.
- ✓ Phone number -- your Brazilian mobile number.
- ✓ Random key (chave aleatoria) -- a UUID generated by your bank. Good for receiving money from people you do not know well.
You can register up to 5 keys per bank account. Each key can only be linked to one account at a time. If you want to move a key to a different bank, you "port" it through the new bank's app.
The three ways to pay with Pix
1. Pix key transfer: Open your bank app, go to Pix, enter the recipient's key (CPF, email, phone, or random key). Confirm the name that appears, enter the amount, and send. Money arrives in seconds.
2. QR code: The most common method at businesses. The store displays a QR code (printed or on a screen). You open your bank app, tap "Pagar com Pix" (Pay with Pix), scan the code, confirm the amount, and send. This is what you will use at restaurants, shops, markets, and street vendors.
There are two types of QR codes: static (same code for every transaction, you enter the amount) and dynamic (amount is pre-filled, like a specific bill or invoice). Most small businesses use static QR codes printed on a card or sticker.
3. Pix Copia e Cola (Copy and Paste): For online payments. Instead of a scannable QR code, you receive a long text string. Copy it, open your bank app, paste it into the Pix payment field, and confirm. This is common for paying utilities, online purchases, and invoices.
Setting up Pix as a foreigner: step by step
Here is the exact process, assuming you are starting from zero:
- 1. Get your CPF. Visit a Correios post office or Receita Federal office with your passport. Takes about 30 minutes. Your CPF arrives by email three to four days later.
- 2. Open a bank account. Download Nubank (or Inter/C6 Bank). Enter your CPF, passport details, take a selfie. Approved in minutes.
- 3. Register your Pix keys. In your bank app, find the Pix section. Tap "Register key" and choose which keys to add. Most foreigners start with their CPF and email.
- 4. Add money to your account. Transfer from Wise, use another Pix transfer, or deposit cash at a Banco24Horas ATM.
- 5. Start using Pix. You are ready to pay and receive money like everyone else in Brazil.
The entire process from CPF to first Pix payment can happen in a single afternoon. Most of the time is spent at the Correios office. The banking and Pix setup takes about 15 minutes total.
Pix limits and security
Every bank lets you set daily Pix limits. This is important for security. Here is what you should know:
Daytime limits (6am-8pm): Typically R$5,000-20,000 depending on your bank and account history. You can adjust this in your bank app. Increases may take 24-48 hours to process (this is a security measure by the Central Bank).
Nighttime limits (8pm-6am): Set lower by default, usually R$1,000. This was introduced after incidents of people being forced to make Pix transfers at night. You can customize the limit, and many people keep it low as an extra security layer.
Security features to enable:
- ✓ Set a low nighttime limit (R$200-500 is common)
- ✓ Enable biometric authentication for Pix transfers
- ✓ Register trusted contacts (transfers to trusted contacts bypass limit restrictions)
- ✓ Always verify the recipient's name before confirming a payment
Pix for paying bills (boletos)
Brazil has a traditional payment system called boleto bancario. It is a printed or digital bill with a barcode that you can pay at any bank, lottery shop, or through your bank app. Many utilities, rent payments, and government fees still use boletos.
The good news: most boletos now include a Pix QR code or Pix Copia e Cola option alongside the traditional barcode. Paying via Pix is instant (boletos can take 1-3 business days to process). Whenever you see both options on a bill, choose Pix.
Some utility companies and landlords even offer a small discount (2-5%) for paying via Pix instead of boleto, because the settlement is instant and costs them less to process.
Pix for receiving money
If someone wants to pay you, they need one of your Pix keys. The simplest approach: share your CPF number. Most Brazilians share their CPF casually for Pix purposes. It is not considered sensitive information in this context.
If you prefer more privacy, share your email Pix key or generate a random key. You can also generate a QR code in your bank app that the payer can scan.
For freelancers: you can generate a Pix Cobranca (payment request) with a specific amount, add a description, and send it to your client. This works like a lightweight invoice. Most bank apps support this feature.
Common Pix mistakes foreigners make
Not setting up nighttime limits: Your bank sets a default, but check that it is low enough for your comfort. This is a real security concern in Brazil.
Using the wrong key type: If you register your CPF as a Pix key at Nubank, you cannot also register it at Inter. Each key is linked to one account. Plan which keys go where if you have multiple banks.
Forgetting to verify the recipient: Before confirming any Pix transfer, your bank shows the recipient's name. Always check it. Scammers sometimes share Pix keys that are not their own.
Trying to use Pix internationally: Pix only works within Brazil. For sending money to other countries, use Wise, your bank's wire transfer service, or similar international transfer providers.

Frequently asked questions
Can foreigners use Pix in Brazil?
Yes. Foreigners can use Pix once they have a CPF and a Brazilian bank account. Both are required. The CPF takes about 30 minutes to get, the bank account takes about 10 minutes after that. Once both are set up, Pix is automatically available through your bank app.
Is Pix safe to use?
Pix is regulated by Brazil's Central Bank and is considered very safe. All transactions are encrypted and authenticated through your bank app. You can set daily and nightly transfer limits, and the Central Bank has a dispute mechanism called MED for fraud cases. Always verify the recipient name before confirming a transfer.
What happens if I send Pix to the wrong person?
Contact your bank immediately. The Central Bank's MED mechanism allows banks to request a return of funds in cases of error or fraud. The receiving bank has up to 80 hours to evaluate the request. While not guaranteed, acting quickly significantly increases your chances of recovery.
Can I use Pix to pay international transfers?
Pix currently only works for domestic transfers within Brazil. For sending money internationally, you need to use services like Wise, Western Union, or your bank's international wire transfer. There are plans to connect Pix with other countries' instant payment systems, but this is not available yet in 2026.
